8 statistics on general surgeon payment plans & models

Here are eight key statistics on general surgeon payments going forward, based on Medscape General Surgeon Compensation Report 2015.

1. Thirty-two percent of general surgeons participate in accountable care organizations.

2. Three percent report being in a concierge practice.

3. Five percent report having a cash-only practice.

4. Nine percent say they aren't currently in an ACO but plan to join one within the year.

5. Twenty-four percent say they'll drop poorly paying insurers.

6. Twenty-seven percent say they need to keep all payers; 19 percent say it's inappropriate to drop insurers because they pay poorly.

7. Seventeen percent of employed general surgeons added ancillary services within the past three years; 18 percent of self-employed general surgeons say the same.

8. Fourteen percent say they regularly discuss costs with patients; another 33 percent occasionally do. Six percent don't discuss costs because they feel it's inappropriate.
