5 Ways to Retain Non-Owner ASC Surgeons in an Oversaturated Market

Like many places, Wichita, Kan., is oversaturated with ambulatory surgery centers, says Judy Graham, clinical director of six-OR Cypress Surgery Center in Wichita. This city of almost 375,000 people has about eight surgery centers and five specialty hospitals. Cypress has an active staff of 55 surgeons, many of whom are non-owners who could easily go to another center if they were dissatisfied. Ms. Graham describes five ways she makes sure her non-owner surgeons are satisfied and won’t go elsewhere.

1. Keep on schedule. Ensuring cases are not running late and turnarounds are tight continues to be the number-one satisfier of surgeons, Ms. Graham says. “We work very hard on this,” she says. “We want to make sure they can get out of here as quickly as possible.”

2. Provide the equipment they need. “Make sure the surgeons have all the equipment they need to do their work,” she says. This includes everyday supplies.

3. Make them feel special. The staff makes a point of greeting surgeons when they come in. Each physician has a personal set of scrubs with their names embroidered on them. Scrubs are laid out for each physician every morning so they do not have to dig around for them. “We want them to know we’re happy they are here,” Ms. Graham says.

4. Provide good food. The center provides lunches for surgeons and staff three times a week. In the warm months they can partake in a barbeque out back. The kitchen is stocked with their favorite snacks.

5. Streamline paperwork. Everything about ASC paperwork is designed so that physicians can get through it easily. “There are only a couple of places they have to sign on the medical records,” Ms. Graham says. Physicians can carry out their dictations remotely by phone.
