1. The number of total surgery center chains (those which own or manage two or more centers) in the country was 381 in 2009, down from 394 in 2008. Eighty percent of the 381 chains owned between two and four ASCs.
2. Of the 6,181 total ASCs in the country, 35 percent (2,170) are part of a chain, up from 23 percent (2,136) in 2008.
3. Twenty-nine surgery center chains operate 51 percent (1,104) of the current ASC market.
4. Here is the distribution of surgery center chains by the number of ASCs they operate:
- 11 or more centers — 8 percent of chains
- 5-10 centers — 12 percent of chains
- 3-4 centers — 26 percent of chains
- 2 centers — 54 percent
5. Here are the five largest surgery center chains:
- AmSurg Corp. — 192 centers
- United Surgical Partners — 151 centers
- Surgical Care Affiliates — 134 centers
- HCA — 121
- Symbion — 65
