5 specialties with pay drops of 5% or more

Of eight specialties that had their annual pay decrease or remain stagnant in the last year, five saw salary drops of more than 5%, according to a survey by Medscape.

The “Physician Compensation Report” for 2023 surveyed 10,011 physicians across more than 29 specialties on their compensation, job satisfaction and other categories between October 2022 and January. 

Here are the five specialties that saw pay decreases of 5% or more in the last year:

  • Ophthalmology: 7% decrease
  • Emergency medicine: 6%
  • Allergy and immunology: 5%
  • Nephrology: 5%
  • Physical medicine and rehabilitation: 5%
