Here are five updates on milestones in surgical robotics, as reported by Becker’s:
1. LEM Surgical’s Dynamis robot for spine surgery earned FDA 510(k) clearance. The robot is the first multi-arm system for hard-tissue surgery. One arm is for surgical guidance and one is for optical navigation. It supports a wide range of surgical instruments.
2. Charles City, Iowa-based Floyd County Medical Center became the first hospital in the state to use Stryker’s Mako 4 robot. The first procedure was performed on April 9 by orthopedic surgeon Jeffrey Clark, MD. Dr. Clark is also the only surgeon in the region using a Mako robot to perform direct anterior approach hip replacements.
3. Think Surgical announced the first use of Maxx Orthopedics’ Freedom total knee implant utilizing the TMINI miniature robotic system. The procedure was performed by David Cashen, MD, a joint replacement specialist at Coastal Orthopedics Surgery Center in Bradenton, Fla.
4. Monogram Technologies earned FDA 510(k) clearance for its Monogram mBôs robot. The system is designed for total knee replacement and will be able to support more orthopedic applications. Monogram plans an initial launch of the system with the cooperation of key surgeons across different regions.
5. Roee Ber, MD, performed the first case with the ExcelsiusHub in New York state. ExcelsiusHub is used for surgical navigation and can be paired with Excelsius3D for intraoperative imaging. Dr. Ber is a spine surgeon at Maimonides Medical Center in New York City.
