5 healthcare startups to look out for in 2017

Healthcare-focused startups have gained steam, with healthcare tech venture funding deals increasing 200 percent between 2010 and 2014, according to TechRepublic.

Judges selected top-tier startups at The Louisville (Ky.) Innovation Summit for promising ideas.

Here are five of those startups to keep on your radar in 2017:

1. Vivor impressed the judges, taking first place at the live pitch event for its PayRX. The platform connects patients with financial assistance programs. Twenty-five hospitals are utilizing the platform and have already matched more than 500 patients with financial assistance. Vivor designed the platform with outpatient treatments in mind.

2. BrainCheck is a mobile cognitive health tracking solution, comparing a patient's cognitive functions to the baseline and population average. The company plans to expand beyond continuing care retirement communities into the home healthcare space.

3. Careband, a wearable technology, is intended for individuals with dementia residing in long-term care settings. The technology identifies the wearer's location as well as monitors the wearer's normal behavior. Thus, when the patient does something out of the ordinary, like falling, the caregiver is alerted.

4. Caregoals offers a software platform for providers to educate, document and record conversations about advanced-care planning. The 12- to 20-minute process allows seniors to make end-of-life decisions before it's too late.

5. Kytera includes a wristband and sensors that pick up on emergency and distress situations among seniors in real time. The sensors are placed in a senior's home and detect unusual behavior or activity.
