3 ways hospitals are revamping design in 2019

Hospitals increasingly see their new buildings as lifelines in a transforming healthcare landscape, according to NBBJ, a healthcare architecture firm with clients including Cleveland Clinic and NYU Langone Health in New York City.

Hospital and healthcare facility design has been impacted by millennials, patient control, neuroscience research and more.

Three other notable trends in healthcare design:

1. Technology. NBBJ is designing bed towers to accommodate robots, which deliver critical medical supplies.

2. Nature. NBBJ is working on designs highlighting the importance of nature. In certain facilities, nutritious food and energy are produced onsite.

3. Environment. Behavioral health has influenced designs focusing on bright colors and environments that don't feel institutional.
