Most physician assistants work in family medicine, based on “2014 Statistical Profile of Certified Physician Assistants” data from the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants.

Here are the 11 top PA practice areas by percent:

1. Family medicine/ general practice: 19.7 percent

2. Surgical subspecialties: 19.5 percent

3. Emergency medicine: 13.8 percent

4. Internal medicine subspecialties: 7.6 percent

5. Internal medicine- general practice: 5.1 percent

6. Dermatology: 4.4 percent

7. Hospital medicine: 3.1 percent

8. General surgery: 2.1 percent

9. Pediatrics: 1.8 percent

10. Obstetrics and gynecology: 1.4 percent

11. Urology: 1.4 percent
