Mr. Taylor says the contents of custom packs and trays should be reevaluated on a regular basis, such as every six months. “It could be that a surgeon has stopped using a piece in the custom pack or something should be added,” he says.
Start by asking the OR team and vendors for suggestions on how to change the packs and trays. Draft some concise recommendations and make them to the physicians.
“For example, you could add surgical scrubs to the custom pack and save on the costs of separate sterilization,” Mr. Tayor says. “But the scrubs would have to be acceptable to the surgeon.”
