Donald McCartney, MD, of the Savannah, Ga.-based Optim Surgery Center operated on two Guatemalan children to correct their scoliosis, NBC affiliate WSAV3 reported.

2. Dr. McCartney performed Ms. Polanco's procedure Nov. 7.

"Our surgery center is required to do a certain amount of indigent care or charity cases and we were behind our percentages at that point. So, it sort of rang a bell in my head I might be able to get this done at our surgery center, and that's how that all came together," Dr. McCarthy told WSAV3.
