Neil Kirschen, MD, is an anesthesiologist with Pain Management Center of Long Island (N.Y.). He also serves as chief of pain management at the department of anesthesiology at South Nassau Communities Hospital in Oceanside, N.Y.

Dr. Neil KirschenBoard-certified in anesthesiology and pain medicine, Dr. Kirschen has done extensive postgraduate training in osteopathic and manual medicine. He uses acupuncture, spinal manipulation, medical massage, craniosacral therapy, ligament reconstructive therapy, natural medicines and interventional anesthetic nerve blocks in his practice. He received his medical degree from Universidad Autónoma de Guadalajara in Jalisco, Mexico, and completed his anesthesiology training at Bronx (N.Y.) Municipal Hospital.

In an interview with Becker's ASC Review, Dr. Kirschen discussed the importance of maintaining a positive relationship between anesthesiologists and ambulatory surgery centers. One point was to sustain the center's profitability by networking with other physicians, such as endoscopists and pain management specialists, who can perform cases there. To accomplish this, it is important to give these physicians consistent and respectful personalized attention, Dr. Kirschen said. "Make sure you don't cancel too many cases [with them], make sure you personally handle procedures brought to you," he said. "Being personal, affable and affordable is the best way to meet with a physician."
