9 ASC Leaders to Know

The ASC industry is marked by leaders who effectively plan, develop, manage and improve ASCs. Here is a list of nine notable leaders in the ASC industry.

1. Rob McCarville of Medical Consulting Group
Before he joined the Medical Consulting Group team in 2002, Rob McCarville was responsible for overseeing 16 separate physician practices. In that role, he built a reputation as a leader who could develop innovative strategies to increase profitability in physician practices. At MCG, he is instrumental in the planning, development and management of MCG's ASC clients and has successfully built collaborative relationships between surgeons and hospitals in ASC joint ventures

2. Ed Gallo, CEO of Genascis
Genascis CEO Ed Gallo is responsible for the company's roll-out of a single-source revenue cycle solution for ASCs, an initiative that Genascis says significantly reduces frustration with the revenue cycle and facilitates faster compensation for ASCs.

3. Tom Jacobs, President of MedHQ
Tom Jacobs has served as president of business office function provider MedHQ since 2003, helping ASCs, surgical hospitals, imaging centers and other physician-affiliated businesses improve operations and reduce costs and risks through effective management.

4. Tom Yerden, CEO of TRY Health Care Solutions
Tom Yerden, CEO of TRY Health Care Solutions in Salmon, Idaho, has more than 28 years of experience in the ASC industry, spanning the development of 70 surgery centers and the founding of Aspen Healthcare — later sold to a national firm — in 1992. He has held COO and CEO positions in several healthcare systems and large physician group practices, where he developed outpatient surgery centers and new outpatient surgical delivery systems.

5. Dr. Larry Teuber of Medical Facilities Corporation
Larry Teuber, MD, currently serves as president of Medical Facilities Corporation, a company that owns 51 percent interest in four specialty surgical hospitals in South Dakota and Oklahoma and two ASCs in California. According to the company's website, MFC's philosophy focuses on efficiency and productivity, and its specialty hospitals strive to create a superior environment to traditional hospitals so that MFC facilities are a first choice for patients and surgeons.

6. Kyle Goldammer of Surgical Management Professionals
Kyle Goldammer, MBA, senior vice president of financial services for Surgical Management Professionals in Sioux Falls, S.D., is a great resource for advice on building a fiscally healthy surgery center. In a Becker's ASC Review column, he discussed the questions every ASC administrator should ask their accounts receivable manager to determine how well the center is doing financially.

7. Robert Murphy of ASC Turnaround Group
As the founder of ASC Turnaround Group and the founder and CEO of Murphy Healthcare Group, Robert Murphy is instrumental is helping to develop and manage quality ASCs across the country. As CEO of Murphy Healthcare Group, which he started in 1990 in Montvale, N.J., he has led the firm in developing over 25 surgery centers and amassing a current aggregate market capitalization of $650 million.

8. Douglas Johnson of RMC MedStone Capital
Since 2008, Douglas Johnson has served as COO of RMC MedStone Capital, a Dallas company that acquires ASCs and small, surgery-based hospitals in partnership with physicians. A seasoned professional and administrator with more than 35 years of healthcare experience, Mr. Johnson has worked with a variety of organizations — freestanding and systemic, rural and urban.

9. Bill Southwick of HealthMark Partners
As president and CEO of HealthMark Partners in Nashville, Tenn., Bill Southwick leads the organization in developing the ASC turnaround strategies and joint venture structures that let HMP partner with physicians and hospitals in developing new facilities or taking over those that underperform. He has helped generate large returns on investment for joint venture parties — results born of his years of experience with physician partnership and business strategy.
