Here are four statistics on payment model participation and relationships with insurers.

1. Thirty-six percent of primary care physicians and 38 percent of specialist physicians expect to participate in the Merit-based Incentive Payment System.

2. Alternative payment model participation fares much worse. Only 13 percent of primary care physicians and 9 percent of specialists expect to participate in the models.

3. Respondents were hesitant to drop insurers that paid poorly.

  • 22 percent said they wouldn’t drop an insurer that paid poorly because they needed all payers
  • 24 percent claimed it was inappropriate to drop a poor-paying insurer
  • 35 percent said they wouldn’t drop an insurer for unspecified reasons
  • 19 percent of physicians said they would drop a poor-paying insurer

4. Physicians are still accepting Medicare and Medicaid patients. Seventy-one percent said they’ll continue accepting Medicaid/Medicare payments. Seven percent said they won’t take new Medicare patients and 6 percent said they won’t take new Medicaid patients. Sixteen percent are undecided.
