Vizient speaks out against CMS' price transparency efforts

Group purchasing company Vizient opposes CMS' proposed outpatient prospective payment system rule because it could limit access to care and drive up prices.

In the proposed rule, CMS would increase price transparency efforts by widening the scope of standard charges to include payer-specific negotiated rates and gross charges. Vizient said mandating such disclosures would hurt patient care because of "potentially misleading cost information."

The company also criticized CMS' proposal to continue reducing payments to hospitals that purchase 340B drugs. The company said courts determined the reductions to be unlawful.
