Utah behind nation in health insurance coverage: 5 key points

The Census Bureau's new data reveals Utah lagging behind the nation in health insurance coverage.

Here are five key points:

1. Contrasted to the nation's 11.7 percent uninsured rate in 2014, 12.5 percent of Utahans were uninsured in 2014.

2. This statistic reveals a lag in improvement, as Utah beat the nation's 14.5 percent uninsured rate in 2013, with a 14 percent uninsured rate.

3. Utah did not accept Medicaid expansion dollars, possibly affecting this smaller improvement.

4. The state did however, receive federal subsidies through the Affordable Care Act to help pay for health insurance premiums.

5. The state legislatures are holding a session in the fall to discuss accepting Medicaid expansion dollars.

"If Utah had accepted Medicaid expansion dollars, the state wouldn't have fallen behind," said Jessie Mandle of Voices for Utah Children. "We're excited that lawmakers have a proposal to expand health insurance coverage…so that thousands of low-income Utahans still can get the healthcare they need…"
