Threat of ACA repeal panicking healthcare lobbies: 4 things to know

Lobbyist organizations from the hospital, insurance and actuary sectors are making it known that a repeal of the ACA could be disastrous, ABC News reports.

Republican leadership is considering repealing the law in 2017 but waiting a year to make the repeal effective to develop and implement a replacement plan.

Here’s what you need to know.

1. Healthcare lobbyists and actuaries believe a repeal of the ACA without a plan already in place would be a disaster.

2. A full repeal would affect 20 million people covered through the exchanges.

3. The American Hospital Association and the Federation of American Hospitals issued statements saying repealing the ACA would results in more than $200 billion in losses to hospital systems.

4. America’s Health Insurance Plans released a statement saying a repeal could create uncertainty and instability in the market, while the American Academy of Actuaries worry the promise of a replacement plan wouldn’t sustain the healthcare market.

President of the National Coalition on Health Care, a consumer-rights lobbyist group, John Rother said public opinion is shifting from a full repeal to repealing the individual mandate.
