Tens of thousands of Wisconsin residents could lose health coverage in July, following a statement by federal officials that they may not sign off on proposed healthcare cuts by Gov. Scott Walker in time, according to a Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel report.
On Friday, President Obama's administration approved some state proposals to cut more than half a billion dollars from healthcare programs. The administration said they won't be able to judge other aspects of the healthcare plans until next year.
According to the report, a deadline written into state law by Gov. Walker and GOP lawmakers requires the state to drop 53,000 adults from the BadgerCare Plus program if the federal government does not approve the proposals by the end of 2011.
State officials would not say whether they would cut the 53,000 adults from the program or would seek to change the mandate under state law. They did say the state would save about $60 million by dropping the adults, which is permissible under federal law.
