Taxpayers fund most of US healthcare — 5 things to know

In 2013, tax-funded expenditures accounted for 64.3 percent of U.S. healthcare spending.

American Journal of Public Health published the data.

Here are five things to know:

1. Tax-funded expenditures totaled nearly $1.9 trillion in 2013.

2. Government spending on healthcare costs in the United States was the highest of any nation in 2013.

3. In 2013, government spending reached $5,960 per capita.

4. Direct government payments for programs like Medicare, Medicaid and the VA accounted for almost half of all health spending.

5. These findings may conflict with common perceptions that the U.S healthcare financing system is predominantly private, according to the study's authors.
