Sen. Bill Brady (R-Bloomington) asked for an emergency hearing to study the findings of a state audit. He criticized Gov. Pat Quinn’s administration for the process of awarding $7 billion in health insurance contracts to blue Cross and Blue Shield of Illinois and two other providers in 2011. The contracts provided health insurance for more than 400,000 Illinois residents.
On Wednesday, the state auditor general issued a separate criticism of the Department of Healthcare and Family Services, which headed the negotiation for the deal, and the Executive Ethics Commission, which monitored the process. The audit criticized the agencies for deficiencies that prevented auditors from determining whether the contracts benefit the state.
