Study finds 60% of California illegal immigrants lack health insurance: 5 things to know

Nearly 60 percent of California's undocumented immigrants do not have health insurance and 51 percent of the illegal immigrant population is impoverished, according to a Public Policy Institute of California report, as reported by HNGN.

Here are five things to know:

1. If state legislators implement legislation to expand insurance coverage to undocumented immigrants, half of the illegal immigrants in California are poor enough to qualify for the state's healthcare program.

2. California's Medi-Cal program is valued at $91 billion.

3. An individual must have an annual income of less than $16,243 and a couple must make less than $21,984 to qualify for Medi-Cal.

4. Last month, Gov. Jerry Brown signed a law providing healthcare to illegal children immigrants. The plan is projected to begin next year and cost $40 million.

5. Experts estimate expanding Medi-Cal to illegal adult immigrants could cost more than $1 billion.
