South Carolina to Raise State Health Insurance Premiums

The South Carolina Budget and Control Board voted Tuesday to raise premiums for the state health plan, instituting a 4.5 percent increase in health insurance for public employees in 2012, according to a WSPA report.

The plan covers nearly 410,000 public employees and their families and state retires and their families. Board members said the increase was necessary to make the system financially sound and ensure that the system has the funding to meet employee healthcare needs.

The board also approved several initiatives that will save taxpayers money. The Department of Revenue will move out of its current office space and consolidate employees in another office building, saving taxpayers more than $4.2 million over the next 10 years; the state Department of Labor, Licensing and Regulation will then move into the empty space, a transition that will save even more money.
