Seema Verma questioned over Indiana contracts: 5 key notes

President Donald Trump's pick to oversee CMS Seema Verma is facing regulatory questions over possible conflicts of interest, the Minnesota Star Tribune reports.

Here's what you should know.

1. Ms. Verma's Indianapolis-based firm, SVC, made millions through consulting agreements with approximately nine states, while also advising Palo Alto, Calif.-based Hewlett Packard.

2. In Indiana, SVC made approximately $6.6 million in consulting fees since 2011. At the same time, she received more than $1 million through a contract with Hewlett. Hewlett is the state's largest operator of Medicaid claim processing systems.

3. If confirmed, Ms. Verma previously disclosed her plans to sell SVC to Lansing, Mich.-based Health Management Associates within 90 days.

4. Ms. Verma released a statement denying any conflicts of interest. Former President George W. Bush's Chief Ethics Lawyer Richard Painter believes she has a conflict of interest.

5. Democratic legislators expressed concerns over Ms. Verma's philosophy about government entitlement and her lack of background in Medicare and in leading large organizations.
