Sanders critical of proposed Medicare cuts — 5 insights

After news leaked of potential budget cuts to Medicare and Medicaid, Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., criticized Senate Republicans saying the cuts would "kill people," The Hill reports.

1. Senate Democrats allege Republicans are cutting $1 trillion-plus from Medicaid and $473 billion from Medicare. Mr. Sanders said a "humane society" should not be allowed to make such cuts.

2. Sen. Kamala Harris, D-Calif., proposed an amendment to prevent any cuts to Medicare, prompting the exchange.

3. Budget Committee Republicans argued the current Medicare funding model is unsustainable.

4. Mr. Sanders argued if officials cut Medicaid by $1 trillion, 15 million people would lose insurance.
