Ryan: GOP plans to reform Medicare, Medicaid in 2018 — 4 insights

Speaker of the House Paul Ryan, R-Wis., said, on Ross Kaminsky's radio talk show, that House GOP will attempt to reform Medicare and Medicaid in 2018, CNN reports.

Here's what you should know:

1. Mr. Ryan said the offerings are "the big drivers of our debt."

2. He said the House and Senate planned to pass two entitlement reform bills and one economic growth bill in 2017. He expects the House and Senate will return to "entitlement reform" in 2018.

3. Mr. Ryan said Medicare is the "biggest entitlement that's got to have reform." He added reform would likely include shifting to a patient-centered system. He said, "People [will] have more choices, we [will] have more competition."

4. He also said the GOP would like to reform the U.S. welfare system.
