Rules for Coding 0230T: With 64483 and its Revenue Code

The following question was in response to New and Revised Category III Codes to Report.Q: We are an ASC, not hospital-based. Can we code 0230T with 64483? Also, what revenue code should we be using for the 0230T code?

Alice Marie Reybitz, RN, BA, CPC, CPC-H, CPC-I, CHI, CPC-H, Curriculum Instructor for AAPC: 0230T is used when ultrasonic guidance is used, 64479-64484 is used when fluoroscopy or CT is used for the assistance. They cannot be billed together unless both were done in the same setting and encounter, and they may ask for the procedural notes before it is paid.

The revenue code for this type of encounter is 379, OTHER anesthesia. It really isn’t a radiology service even if radiology is used for it … and it isn’t orthopedic in nature. 0230T would be a SI “T” and APC 00207.
