Rheumatologist charged in $240M fraud scheme for unnecessary diagnoses, treatments: 5 things to know

Rheumatologist Jorge Zamora-Quezada, MD, was charged for allegedly participating in a $240 million healthcare fraud scheme, according to KRGV.

 

Here are five things to now.

1. Dr. Zamora-Quezada allegedly diagnosed otherwise healthy patients with various diseases and disorders.

2. According to KHOU11, Dr. Zamora-Quezada is accused of giving patients false diagnoses and prescribing medications unnecessarily in order to achieve personal financial gain. He and others involved in the scheme also laundered the money by investing in real estate in the U.S. and Mexico and then renting out the properties.

3. The co-conspirators also created fictitious patient records and reportedly concealed medical records from Medicare in a Rio Grande Valley-based barn.

4. All together, Dr. Zamora is charged with one count of conspiracy to commit healthcare fraud, one count of conspiracy to commit money laundering and five counts of healthcare fraud. He pleaded not guilty, according to My San Antonio.

5. The indictment claims the co-conspirators purchased luxury items with the money from the scheme.
