Recent rankings by Watertown, Mass.-based athenahealth, a leading provider of internet-based business services to physician practices, and Physicians Practice show that national health insurers are paying physicians 5.3 percent faster and denying 9.0 percent fewer medical claims over the prior year, according to an athenahealth news release.
The fourth annual PayerView Rankings evaluated 172 national, regional and government payors in 40 states and were compiled using performance data from more than 18,000 medical providers representing over 41 million medical charge lines and $7 billion dollars in charges billed to payors in 47 states for all four quarters of 2008. The data are derived from athenahealth's EHR and practice management platform, athenaNet, and ranks health insurers according to specific measures of financial performance, administrative performance and medical policy complexity, according to the release.
Louisville, Ky.-based Humana was ranked first in overall performance, with 26.7 days in accounts receivable and a 5.3 percent denial rate. New York Medicaid was ranked lowest in overall performance, with 160.9 days in A/R and a denial rate of 34.1 percent.
