In the first quarter of 2009, a total of 19,967 questionable claims were referred to NICB from its member insurance companies, compared with 24,497 questionable claims in the first quarter of 2011. Questionable claims are those that member insurance companies refer to NICB for closer review and investigation based on indicators of possible fraud.
Vehicle claims were down 4 percent, but all other claims categories — property, casualty, commercial, workers’ compensation and miscellaneous — were up. The highest increases were in casualty and miscellaneous claims, which both rose 25 percent.
While questionable claims are not definitive incidents of fraud, they provide an early warning of potentially fraudulent activity, according to the report.
