President Donald Trump predicts drugmakers will drop prices voluntarily — 5 insights

During a speech, President Donald Trump predicted several drugmakers would voluntarily drop their prices by a "massive" amount, Politico reports.

1. President Trump made the remark as he signed a bill allowing terminally ill patients access to non-FDA approved therapies May 30.

2. Neither President Trump nor his administration would elaborate on what he meant, nor was his administration aware the announcement would be made.

President Trump said, "We’re going to have some of the big drug companies in, in two weeks and they’re going to announce — because of what we did — they’re going to announce voluntary massive drops in prices, so that's great. For the first time ever in this country, there will be a major drop in the cost of prescription drugs."

5. President Trump has made several promises to lower drug costs in the past.
