Payers steering hospitals to ASCs: 5 unfolding trends

More than 60% of hospitals and health systems report that payers are pressuring them to ASC options for appropriate cases, according to Avanza’s Intelligence Hospital Leadership ASC Survey.

Here are four key insights from the survey:

  1. Twenty-five percent of surveyed hospitals and health systems said they are expanding their ASC footprint specifically due to payer pressure.
  2. When asked why they own or partner with ASCs, 66% of respondents cited the need to increase outpatient surgical capacity, 65% aimed to strengthen physician relationships, 52% pointed to shifting consumer trends and 33% were focused on cost reduction.
  3. A rising trend involves commercial payers partnering with hospitals and health systems—a movement expected to accelerate in the coming years, according to the report.
  4. In 2024, 90% of hospitals and health systems plan to increase their investments in or affiliations with ASCs, a notable jump from about 70% in 2023.
