The New York Senate yesterday approved legislation to reduce costly and unexpected medical charges to health insurance consumers, according to a NewsLI report. The bill, S7745, establishes protections and ensures consumers have adequate access to necessary services.

The National Health Insurer Report Card released data on Aetna, Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield, Cigna, Health Care Service Corporation, Humana, Regence, UnitedHealthcare and Medicare. The data was gathered from 380 physician practices between February and March 2012.

Approximately 46.3 million people in the United States do not have health insurance, a trend that has risen steadily over the past 15 years, according to the 2011 National Health Interview Survey and a FOX News report.
