Here’s what you need to know.
1. Governor John Kasich (R) appointed Barbara Sears to the post. Ms. Sears is a former state representative (R-Sylvania). She resigned from the house in June to serve in the governor’s Office of Health Transformation.
2. Ms. Sears was in favor of the Medicaid expansion.
3. Mr. McCarthy had been in the office since 2011. During his tenure he restructured the office making it an independent cabinet agency, expanded managed care and home-based opportunities and expanded the state’s program under the ACA.
He saved taxpayers more than $3 billion and lowered the program’s growth rate to 3.3 percent. Before Gov. Kasich entered office the program had a 9 percent growth rate.
4. Gov. Kasich believes Ms. Sears will bring expertise and leadership to the position.
