The 23.5 percent increase was linked to a decline in insurance benefits provided by private employers. The report, published by the Fiscal Policy Institute, also showed a 63 percent increase in the number of food stamp recipients in the city over the past four years, as well as a 2.2 percent drop in real median household income.
Advocates of a state health insurance exchange believe lawmakers should approve the system to start tackling the state’s growing shortage of healthcare coverage. The exchange would not take effect until 2014, and the state must set up an exchange by then or allow the federal government to take over the process.
