The governor signed a bill that will require insurance companies to cover sickle cell anemia, a bloodborne illness found predominantly among black people that can be fatal. The bill will only affect insurance policies issued by state-regulated plans or the program for state government employees — not companies that are self insured or regulated by the federal government.
According to another bill signed by Gov. Christie, health insurance drugs must cover oral cancer drugs, treating them no less favorably “than intravenous anticancer medications.”
