Nearly 11% of New York residents lack health insurance: 4 key points

New York City Comptroller Scott Stringer found more than 962,000 New York residents, or 11.4 percent of the state population, do not have health insurance, according to CBS New York.

Here are four key points:

1. Despite these staggering numbers, this is the first time the number is below 1 million in the last five years, according to Comptroller Stringer.

2. In neighborhoods with large immigrant and younger populations, the rate of uninsured residents reached more than 22 percent.

3. Comptroller Stringer said, “Close to a million New Yorkers do not have the basic healthcare coverage that they’re entitled to have.”

4. The Affordable Care Act open enrollment period runs from Nov. 1 to Dec. 15. Coverage begins Jan. 1.
