More Coders Employed in 2013 Than 2012

Unemployment numbers for healthcare coders are drastically down from where they were last year, according to the 2013 AAPC Healthcare Salary Survey.

Currently Certified Professional Coders have a 1.7 percent unemployment rate, compared with the national unemployment average of 7.4 percent.

Here are eight statistics comparing approximate unemployment rates between 2012 and 2013 for coders of various educational backgrounds.

Coders without a college degree:
2012 — 10 percent
2013 — 5 percent

Those with a college degree:
2012 — 11 percent
2013 — 6 percent

CPC:
2012 — 3.5 percent
2013 — 2 percent

Apprentices:
2012 — 24 percent
2013 — 15 percent
