According to the report, many physicians find that virtual colonoscopy is a better option than traditional colonoscopy because it does not require sedation and has lower risk of bowel perforation. CMS said on its Web site that many Medicare patients often have polyps, which require them to undergo a conventional colonoscopy in addition to the virtual one.
CMS is requesting comments from the public for the next 30 days before it makes its final decision.
