Lack of Standardization Slows Health Information Exchange Progress

Health information exchange will be beneficial once providers and regulators have worked out the issues, but many challenges lie ahead, according to Info World.

One of the challenges is the different standards that exist for medical billing records. One EMR may not be able to export or import data from another EMR. Until a standard way for exchanging records from various systems is developed, little progress can be made.

Another challenge is a federal law that prohibits a national ID for patients. Without the ID, providers have to manually match and confirm records patient identification prior to sharing. For more common names, this process could be time consuming.
