Lack of EHR interoperability holding back value-based care — 5 insights

A series of healthcare stakeholders said insufficient EHR interoperability is one of the major barriers to value-based care adoption, HealthData Management reports.

Here's what you should know:

1. Altamonte Springs, Fla.-based Adventist Health System CMO Nishant Anand, MD, used his own health system as an example. About 66 percent of the physicians at Adventist work with independent ACOs and clinically integrated networks, which utilize more than 30 different EHR platforms.

2. Dr. Anand said, "This makes it increasingly difficult to share patient information between the providers that make up our network. The result is a consumer experience that is difficult and cumbersome, tests and treatments that are duplicated, and vital lifesaving information that is not always available."

3. Healthcare Leadership Council President Mary Grealy stressed the need for health systems to make progress in data sharing and data interoperability.

4. She pointed to telemedicine as a way to allocate resources better and expand the reach of healthcare organizations.

5. Dr. Anand said the following could improve interoperability:

  • Open application programming interface standards
  • Allowing for third-party applications in EHRs
  • Ensuring APIs support bulk data extraction and exchange
  • Removing data extraction limitations
  • Requiring API functionality disclosures
