Judge rules Cigna can walk away from Anthem merger — 3 insights

A Delaware chancery judge denied Anthem’s request to bar Cigna from leaving its potential merger with Anthem, Bloomberg reports. Cigna can now walk away from the potential merger with Anthem.

Here’s what you should know.

1. Anthem will possibly have to pay up to $14.85 billion in a breakup fee and in additional damages to Cigna, Bloomberg reports.

2. Anthem was seeking an U.S. Supreme Court review of the case. Analysts believe the Supreme Court would likely decline the review if Cigna leaves the merger.

3. Both Anthem and Cigna spokespeople had no immediate comments to Bloomberg on the ruling.
