Healthcare fraud & abuse recoveries total $1B+ in 2016: 4 takeaways

An Office of Inspector General report found HHS increased its healthcare fraudulent payments and settlements by more than $1 billion in the first six months of 2016, according to McKnight's.

Here are four takeaways:

1. OIG expects total recoveries between Oct. 1, 2015 and March 31, 2016 to total $2.77 billion.

2. Of the figure, OIG expects nearly $555 million in recoveries found through audits and $2.2 billion through investigations.

3. Over the last three years, civil money penalties have increased almost five times, and OIG expects CMP recoveries to reach an all-time high during the fiscal year 2016.

4. During the first half of 2016, the report found 1,662 individuals and entities prohibited from participating in federal healthcare programs.
