The rate increases, which were expected from some of the state’s largest health insurers, will mostly affect policyholders in plans offered through small businesses. Increases are expected to average from 3-17 percent, though some individuals could see much higher hikes.
For example, some Aetna small group customers will see their rates jump 92.5 percent, according to the report. Health Net of California, Kaiser and Sharp Health Plan also have small group rate hikes that start today.
The rate hikes are fueling the argument of lawmakers and consumer advocates pushing for Assembly Bill 52, legislation that would place rate regulations and caps on health insurers.
