Former Rep. Ellen Tauscher: Increasing public-private competition will encourage healthcare reform: 4 takeaways

Former U.S. Representative Ellen Tauscher believes increasing competition between the public and private sector could spur the change needed to save the ACA, according to a column in The Hill.

Here's what you should know.

1. Ms. Tauscher, the board chair for eHealth — an online insurance broker, wants online insurance brokers to have easier access to sell on the exchanges, or she wants regulations eased to allow for inexpensive policies.

2. Ms. Tauscher believes the monopolies the big insurance companies have on the exchanges goes against what the ACA was established to do.

3. Ms. Tauscher believes private, online insurance brokers can solve the problems the major insurers are facing through the ACA through their lack of low-risk enrollees.

Her online insurance company touts a 59 percent low-risk enrollee rate.

4. Ms. Tauscher believes if there were more inexpensive options on the exchanges, the low-risk population would sign up through the exchanges and mitigate the risk insurer's take on through the high-risk patients.
