A study published in the Journal of the American Medical Informatics Association has raised concerns over the transition from ICD-9 to ICD-10 Patient Safety Indicators, according to a HealthData Management report.

The study authors suggest that the ICD-10-CM translation poses risk for:

•    Comparing safety incidents
•    Inflating the number of Patient Safety Indicators
•    Increasing variability of calculations related to the coding system translation
