CMS to Expand Number of ICD-9 Codes

CMS will expand the number of ICD-9 diagnosis and procedure codes it will accept on an institutional claim beginning in 2011, according to a CMS provider education article.

CMS currently processes only the first nine diagnosis codes and six procedure codes submitted electronically, even though its electronic format allows as many as 25 ICD-9 codes.

The change will add secondary diagnosis codes and associated present-on-admission codes.
