Mr. Sullivan cites a post by John Halamka, MD, CIO of Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center and CIO at Harvard Medical School, in his Life as a Healthcare CIO blog, where he proposes ICD-10 could be deferred until 2016 to give IT professionals more time to create EHRs, HIEs and registries in preparation for ACOs. He also cites an ICD-10Watch reader poll that found 70 percent of respondents have not yet managed HIPAA 5010 compliance.
According to his blog post, however, CMS is continuing to implement the program based on the Oct. 1, 2013 compliance deadline in the final rule published Jan. 16, 2009.
