The letter focused on the difficulty of meeting lofty ACO expectations for smaller physician practices. The ASA asked CMS to take into account the difficulty of outcomes assessment for solo and small practices, as well as the difficulty of implementing electronic health record systems.
The ASA also urged CMS to support small, rural anesthesia practices by providing similar incentives as those offered to other providers that practice in rural areas. The letter also suggested providing loans and technical assistant programs for anesthesia practices investing to become ACOs.
