CMS: ICD-10 fact sheet

The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services has released a fact sheet on ICD-10 and the impending Oct. 1 transition deadline. Here are five things to know from the fact sheet.

•    ICD-9 is more than 35 years old.
•    ICD-10 is designed to provide improved support for patient care, quality measurement, management and analytics.
•    Physicians and physician groups provided input for the development of ICD-10-CM.
•    Further delay of the ICD-10 transition would be costly for all healthcare stakeholders.
•    CMS has conducted ICD-10 outreach, education and testing in preparation for the switch to the new coding set.
