CMS: 9 Transition and Testing Steps for Large Physician Practices

The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services recommend that the testing and transition phases of ICD-10 should have begun in March 2013 and continue through September 2014.

Here are nine transition and testing steps for large physician practices to know.

•    Conduct high-level ICD-10 training for clinicians and coders
•    Begin testing ICD-10 codes and systems with coding, billing and clinical staff
•    Utilize ICD-10 codes for diagnoses most often seen in a practice
•    Test data and reports for accuracy
•    Test claims and transactions with trading partners
•    Review coder and clinician preparation
•    Begin detailed ICD-10 code training
•    Work with vendors to ensure preparedness
•    Oct. 1: complete the ICD-10 transition for full compliance
