Can the ACA make a comeback? 4 key takeaways

President Obama's health law insured thousands of Americans, but payers did not fare well financially in the exchanges. This led many to cease offering plans in 2017, according to CNN.

Here are four takeaways:

1. Many of the nation's leading payers are leaving the Affordable Care Act state exchanges next year, with Aetna recently announcing it was leaving 11 state exchanges in 2017.

2. Payers cite huge losses as a contributor to their ACA exit, with Aetna saying it lost nearly $430 million on the exchanges in the last two and a half years.

3. To sustain these payer exits, the ACA could employ various strategies. One strategy entails requiring payers to enroll both healthy and unhealthy customers on the exchange to strike a balance.

4. CNN explains the government could also provide a Medicare-type plan in the exchanges that would bring in enough customers to offset the losses payers suffered from insuring less healthy Americans.
